Holy Land Travelogue

Written by Beng Hock & Su Yng

As scribes for the trip, we wanted to record as accurately as we possibly could the journey we had partaken together. What follows is an account on a day-by-day basis of the adventure (or pilgrimage as Pastor Vic called it) we shared. If there is any wrong information in the account or should the sequence of events be mistakenly recorded, please accept our apologies and excuse our lapse in memory or perhaps our lack of ability to properly put such an experience in words. - Beng Hock & Su Yng

Day 1 Sunday Nov 16

Written by Beng Hock & Su Yng

The first morning of our trip - had a good breakfast at the hotel, the Grand Pyramids. We were introduced to Remon, our Cairo guide. Travelling through Giza, on the way to the Egyptian Museum, we passed by the Cairo Zoo, the University and many uncompleted buildings. We were told that they were deliberately left uncompleted to avoid paying taxes. And in a block of uncompleted building, you could see one or two units which would be lived in, painted and having a T.V. satellite.

Day 2 Monday Nov 17

Our guide advised us to start off early in the morning to avoid the sun and the crowd for a tour of the Pyramids and the Great Sphinx. These Pyramids are magnificent and one could imagine them in their past splendour – gleaming white limestone structures topped with gold, dominating the landscape. Egypt truly is a land with a glorious past.

Third breakfast at the Great Pyramids – most of us had already fallen for the omelets and pancakes so we did what we ‘kiasu’ Singaporeans are most adept at – queuing for them.

It took us 40 minutes or more just for the bus to get out of the city centre. Enroute to Coptic Cairo, we passed by the River Nile; observed how the people crossed the streets, how they thronged up buses and jumped off vehicles. It is really quite a wonder how they managed to reach their destinations safely. Of course, to live up to its reputation of being the ‘City of a Thousand Minarets’, there are quite a number of mosques as well.

‘Up Mount Sinai’

‘No rise and shine’ for the 26 brave climbers of the Sinai. Wanting to catch the sunrise at the summit, we assembled in the lobby of El Wadi Makadas at an unearthly 2.30 a.m. All of us were wrapped like ‘bak changs’. With the exception of two (who resorted to ‘borrowing’ the hotel’s towels), each was equipped with the all important pillow. The pillow was to be strategically placed between the sitter and the protruding stick at the back of the camel’s saddle.

Our visit to Petra

It would be rather clichéd to say that it is the most beautiful ruin I have ever set my eyes on. I suppose the photos are self-explanatory.
