The coffee can become coldMy friend asked, ” What will you do to a cup of hot coffee to become cold?” There were varied answers from the young people on the floor. Add water to it. Stir it. Blow it with a fan. These were few of their answers. All of them were right. “Just do nothing“, my friend said, after nobody can think of any other reason. Almost everyone was startled. Nobody thought about it. That included myself. Our Christian life is a privilege. But we should not forget that it is also a responsibility. It’s a privilege to be adopted as God’s children but we have responsibilities to live as such. To obtain salvation freely is a privilege but we have to “work out” our salvation with fear and trembling ( Phil 2:12). It’s a privilege to be loved by God but we have the responsibility to keep ourselves in the love of God( Jude 21). To most Christians who became cold and defeated, the reason is traceable to neglect. Neither the Christian desire to live a defeated life nor to turn away from God. Only that many disdain to fulfill their basic personal responsibilities and disciplines daily in streghthening their relationship with God. A little neglect to read His word, to worship, to pray and to obey Him today may produce subtle yet catastrophic results. Sooner or later, your heart will become cold and stale. And you might not be aware of it. You may continue the “religious” rituals but the joy within is fading away. The coffee sitting idly in the table for sometime may appear ok at first. Until you started to sip, that you know the coffee is cold. Then you just realized how your mind was occupied with some other things that you forgot all about your coffee. What about our spiritual lives? Have we been pre-occupied with something else to neglect it? Let it not be so. |
